MacBook Screen Repair Cost and Value

7 questions covering pricing, comparisons, and whether repair is worth it

Q1How much does a MacBook screen repair cost at MacExpress?

The cost depends on your MacBook model and year. A MacBook Air repair is priced differently to a MacBook Pro 14-inch or 16-inch, and newer Apple Silicon models can carry different part costs to Intel-era machines. Rather than publish a price table that might mislead you, we provide a free, no-obligation quote tailored to your exact device. Most customers have a quote back within a few hours of enquiring.

Get your personalised quote at macexpress.com.au/free-quote/ — takes less than two minutes.
Q2How much does Apple charge for a MacBook screen repair?

Apple’s out-of-warranty screen repair pricing varies by model and tends to be significantly higher than independent repair, in part because Apple often replaces far more than just the screen. In many cases they replace the entire top case, which includes the keyboard and battery, even when only the display needs attention. That approach pushes the cost up considerably. If you have received a quote from Apple and want to compare, get a free quote from us and see what a specialist screen repair costs for your exact model.

Q3Is it worth repairing a MacBook screen, or should I just buy a new one?

For any MacBook from 2019 onward in otherwise good condition, repair almost always makes financial sense. The cost of a screen repair is typically a fraction of what a comparable new or refurbished MacBook costs, and you keep a machine you already know with your data and software intact.

A new MacBook Air M3 starts at around $1,799 in Australia. If your screen repair costs a third of that, you are extending the life of a high-value device for significantly less than replacing it. The calculation shifts if your MacBook has multiple serious faults beyond the screen. In those cases we will tell you honestly, because we would rather give you good advice than take money for a repair that does not make sense. Request a free quote and we can help you work out whether repair is the right call for your situation.

Q4What is my MacBook worth with a broken screen versus after repair?

A cracked or damaged screen significantly reduces resale value because any prospective buyer knows they will either have to live with it or pay to fix it themselves. After a professional repair with quality parts and a warranty, the MacBook sells or trades at or close to its full second-hand market value. For anyone planning to sell or trade in, the repair often pays for itself.

Q5Are there any hidden fees I should know about?

No. The quote we provide covers the full repair including parts and labour. Free tracked courier collection and return shipping is included for all repairs, so there is no freight charge on top of your quote. If we open your MacBook and find additional damage that would affect the repair, we contact you before doing anything. You approve any change in scope before we proceed, and there are no surprises on the invoice.

Q6My MacBook is a few years old. Is it still worth fixing the screen?

MacExpress specialises in MacBook screen repairs for 2019 to 2026 models. These machines retain strong resale value and remain genuinely capable computers. A 2020 MacBook Air M1 is still an excellent machine and well worth protecting. If your MacBook falls within our supported range and is otherwise working well, the screen repair almost certainly makes sense. We will let you know if we think otherwise when you submit your free quote request.

Q7Can I claim the repair through insurance or as a tax deduction?

Many customers successfully claim MacBook screen repairs through home and contents insurance for accidental damage. We provide a full itemised invoice and written damage assessment on request, which is typically what insurers require. If your MacBook is used for work, the repair cost may also be tax deductible as a work-related expense. We issue a GST-compliant invoice for every repair as standard.

Q8I got a cheaper quote somewhere else. Why should I choose MacExpress?

Price differences in MacBook screen repair almost always come down to parts quality. A significantly cheaper repair typically uses a budget aftermarket screen with lower brightness, poorer colour accuracy, and reduced longevity. MacExpress uses genuine Apple parts where available, and OEM-equivalent parts where genuine parts cannot be sourced. We do not use aftermarket screens at all because the quality is not there. We also back every repair with a 6-month warranty, which is more than double the 90-day standard most repair shops offer. Many of our customers come to us after a cheaper repair elsewhere has disappointed them. We would rather you choose quality once.

Understanding Your MacBook Screen Problem

9 questions covering damage types, symptoms, and what is actually wrong

Q9My MacBook screen is black but the laptop is still on. What is wrong?

A black screen with the laptop apparently running most commonly points to a display or backlight fault rather than a problem with the computer itself. The most reliable way to check is to connect your MacBook to an external monitor via USB-C. If the external display works fine, the fault is in the screen assembly and that is something we repair routinely. If the external display is also blank, the issue may involve the logic board, which requires a different assessment. Either way, get in touch and we will help you work out what is going on before you commit to anything.

Q10Why does my MacBook screen have lines running across or down it?

Horizontal or vertical lines are almost always a hardware fault. Either the LCD panel has failed from impact or pressure, or the display cable running through the hinge has become damaged or loose. Lines that only appear when the lid is at a certain angle strongly suggest a cable fault. Lines that are always present regardless of lid position more often point to the panel itself. In either case it is not something that resolves on its own and it typically gets worse over time. Send us a photo or short video of your screen via our free quote page and we can give you a much clearer picture of what is involved before you send it in.

Q11Why is my MacBook screen flickering?

The most common hardware causes are a failing display cable or a panel fault. In MacBook Pros in particular, the display cable runs through the hinge and can wear over time with repeated opening and closing. If the flickering only happens at certain lid angles or gets worse when you move the screen, the cable is the likely culprit. If it happens regardless of position, the panel or a deeper connection issue is more likely. Do not wait on flickering as it usually progresses, and a screen that flickers occasionally can eventually stop working altogether.

Q12My MacBook screen looks milky, hazy, or cloudy. What is that?

This is almost certainly anti-reflective coating delamination, a known issue on Retina MacBook displays particularly from the 2013 to 2019 era. The factory coating breaks down over time, especially if the screen has ever been cleaned with anything other than a lightly damp microfibre cloth. Once the coating starts to fail it tends to spread. The only fix is a screen replacement. There is no way to restore a delaminated coating in place, and the replacement screen will look noticeably better than what you have been looking at.

Q13Can a small crack on a MacBook screen get worse if I keep using it?

Yes, and often faster than people expect. A crack creates a structural weakness in the glass, and normal stress from opening and closing the lid, flex when the MacBook is in a bag, or even temperature changes can cause it to spread. What starts as a corner crack can develop into a spiderweb pattern across the whole display. A cracked screen can also allow dust and moisture into the display layers over time, which creates secondary problems. If the LCD beneath the glass is currently intact, getting it repaired sooner is simpler and generally less expensive than waiting until more layers are affected.

Q14My MacBook screen has strange colours or a colour tint. Is that fixable?

Colour distortion, whether that is a pink, green, or yellow tint, one part of the screen displaying differently, or colours that shift at certain angles, is typically a display panel or cable fault. Before assuming hardware, it is worth going to System Settings then Displays and resetting any custom colour profile. If the problem persists after that, hardware is the cause and a screen replacement resolves it in almost all cases.

Q15There is a ghost image or burn-in on my MacBook screen. What can be done?

True burn-in requires a screen replacement. There is no software fix or calibration that removes it from an LCD panel. It is worth noting that what looks like burn-in is occasionally image persistence, which is temporary and resolves after displaying a white or solid-colour screen for a few minutes. If the ghost image is always there regardless, it is genuine burn-in and a replacement screen is the right solution.

Q16My screen was damaged by liquid. Is it repairable?

Liquid damage to the screen itself, whether that is water marks behind the glass, foggy patches, or spots, is usually resolved with a screen replacement. The more important concern with any liquid spill is what else may have been affected beyond the screen. If liquid reached the logic board, additional damage may be present. We assess this when we receive your MacBook and let you know the full picture before proceeding with any repair.

Q17My MacBook screen is very dim and getting darker. Is that the backlight failing?

Quite possibly. Before assuming hardware, check that auto-brightness has not been changed under System Settings then Displays. If the screen is genuinely dim at maximum brightness, or noticeably dimmer than it used to be, the backlight layer or panel is likely deteriorating. A screen replacement restores full brightness to the original factory level, and this is a standard part of our repair process.

Screen Parts, Quality and MacBook Screen Repairs

6 questions covering what goes in, what it looks like, and how it compares

Q18What kind of screens does MacExpress use?

We use genuine Apple parts where we can source them, and OEM-equivalent parts where genuine parts are not available. We do not use aftermarket screens at all. In our experience the quality is not there, and we are not willing to put a screen in your MacBook that we would not be confident in ourselves.

This is also the reason we only service certain MacBook models and years. When genuine or OEM-equivalent screens become unavailable for a particular model, we stop offering that repair rather than compromise on what goes in. It is a deliberate decision and one we think matters.

Q19Will the new screen look the same as my original?

With genuine or OEM-equivalent parts, the replacement screen should be visually indistinguishable from the original in everyday use. Same resolution, same brightness range, same colour profile. We run a full quality check on every repair covering dead pixels, brightness uniformity, and colour accuracy. If it does not meet the standard, it does not leave our workshop.

Q20Will the webcam still work after the screen is replaced?

Yes. The FaceTime camera is part of the screen assembly, so a full assembly replacement means you are getting a new camera along with the screen. We test the camera as part of our standard post-repair check before your MacBook is returned to you.

Q21What MacBook models does MacExpress repair?

We repair MacBook Air and MacBook Pro screen damage for 2019 to 2026 models. This covers MacBook Air 13-inch and 15-inch across M1, M2, and M3 generations along with Intel models from 2019 and 2020, and MacBook Pro 13-inch, 14-inch, 15-inch, and 16-inch across Intel and Apple Silicon generations. Not sure if your model is covered? Include your serial number in your free quote request and we will confirm straight away.

Q22Do you replace the full screen assembly or just the panel inside?

In most cases we replace the full screen assembly, which is the complete lid unit including the display, glass, bezel, and housing. This is the most reliable approach. It ensures perfect alignment, a clean factory finish, and removes the risks associated with separating bonded glass from LCD panels. Where it makes sense, such as when the lid housing is in good condition and the customer wants to preserve original cosmetics, we can also perform an internal panel replacement. We will recommend the right approach for your situation when we assess the repair.

Q23What quality checks are done once the repair is complete?

Every MacExpress repair goes through a thorough check before we pack it for return. We run a dead pixel test using full colour sweeps, check brightness uniformity across the panel, verify colour accuracy, test the FaceTime camera, confirm auto-brightness is responding, and inspect the physical assembly for any gaps, bubbles, or raised edges. We also confirm the lid opens, closes, and holds its angle correctly. The repair is only signed off once everything passes.

How the MacBook Screen Repair Process Works

7 questions covering steps, timing, and what to expect

Q24How does the MacExpress repair process work from start to finish?

The process is straightforward. You start by requesting a free quote, describing or photographing your screen damage. Once you are happy with the quote and ready to proceed, we arrange a courier to collect your MacBook directly from your door. We repair it, run our full quality check, and send it back to you with tracked return shipping. Both collection and return are free. On average the whole process takes around three working days door to door, though this can vary depending on demand and when your order comes through. Once we have your MacBook in our hands, the repair itself is typically done within 24 hours, again subject to current workload.

Q25How long does a MacBook screen repair take?

Once your MacBook arrives with us, the repair is typically completed within 24 hours. The total door to door time including courier collection and return shipping averages around three working days. Busier periods and the timing of your order can affect this, so if you have a specific deadline in mind it is worth mentioning when you get your quote and we will do our best to accommodate you.

Q26Do I need to back up my MacBook before sending it in?

A screen repair does not touch your data at all. Your storage and everything on it sits in the base of the MacBook, completely separate from the screen assembly. That said, we always recommend having a current backup before handing any device to anyone for any reason. It is simply good practice. If you use Time Machine or iCloud Backup, make sure your most recent backup is current before the courier collects it.

Q27What do I need to do to prepare my MacBook before the courier collects it?

Not much at all. Remove any external devices like USB drives or dongles. A screen repair does not require your login password, so there is no need to change your account settings. Have a current backup if possible. Once your repair is confirmed, we will send you clear packing instructions. You will need to provide your own packaging and we will guide you on what works well so the MacBook travels safely. The courier collects from your door at a time that suits you.

Q28Will I get updates while my MacBook is being repaired?

Yes. You will hear from us when we confirm receipt of your MacBook, when the repair is complete and has passed our quality check, and when it has been dispatched back to you with tracking details. If we find anything unexpected during the repair we contact you before doing anything. Nothing changes without your approval.

Q29Can I get a quote before committing to anything?

Yes, and we encourage it. Submit your details and a photo or description of the damage at macexpress.com.au/free-quote/ and we will come back to you with a fixed price, usually within a few hours. No work begins until you have approved the quote. There is no charge for the assessment and no obligation to proceed if you decide not to.

Q30Do you repair MacBooks for businesses?

Yes. MacExpress works with businesses of all sizes, from small teams with a handful of MacBooks through to larger organisations managing fleets of devices. We provide GST-compliant tax invoices for all repairs. If you expect regular repair volume, get in touch to discuss an ongoing arrangement.

Data Safety and Privacy

3 questions covering what happens to your files and privacy during repair

Q31Is my data safe during a MacBook screen repair?

Yes. A screen repair is entirely confined to the screen assembly, which is the lid portion of your MacBook. Your storage and all of your data sits in the base and is not accessed, connected to, or disturbed during a screen replacement. Your files, accounts, photos, and documents are not accessible to us and are not at risk during this type of repair.

Screen repairs involve the display assembly only. Your SSD, macOS, and all data remain completely untouched.
Q32Do you need my password to repair the screen?

Generally no. In the vast majority of repairs we do not need your login password at all. In rare and specific cases we may ask, for example if we want to check a secondary issue like a camera fault to make sure everything is working correctly. If we do ask, you will always have the option to decline, and you can back out of the repair entirely at that point with no obligation. We will always raise this before we begin any work.

Q33I have sensitive work files on my MacBook. Should I be concerned?

We understand the concern. Many of our customers are professionals with confidential client data, legal documents, or business-sensitive files on their machines. A screen repair does not give us access to any of that. If you have specific concerns or compliance requirements, get in touch and we are happy to talk through the repair process in detail before you commit.

Warranty and Aftercare

5 questions covering what is covered, for how long, and what to do if something goes wrong

Q34What warranty do you provide on MacBook screen repairs?

Every MacExpress repair comes with a 6-month warranty on parts and labour. That is more than double the 90-day standard most independent repair shops offer in Australia. The warranty covers any fault with the replaced screen assembly that is not the result of new accidental damage. If a display fault appears within six months of your repair, we will fix it at no charge.

6-month warranty on every repair. More than double the industry standard 90 days.
Q35What does the warranty cover and what does it not cover?

The warranty covers any defect in the replacement screen itself. Dead pixels that appear after repair, brightness or colour faults, flickering, or failure of the screen assembly that is not the result of new physical impact are all covered. It does not cover new accidental damage such as dropping the MacBook again, liquid exposure, or a fresh impact crack on the replacement screen. The warranty covers the repair we did, not future accidents. If you are unsure whether something qualifies, get in touch and we will take a look.

Q36How do I make a warranty claim?

Contact us, describe the issue, and include your original repair reference number. We will assess whether the fault is covered and if so, arrange collection and re-repair. There is no argument or runaround. If the repair has failed, we fix it.

Q37There is a dead pixel on my screen after the repair. Is that covered?

We run a dead pixel test on every screen before it leaves our workshop, so a dead pixel appearing immediately after the repair would be unusual. If one does appear within the warranty period and it is not the result of physical damage, it is covered. Contact us and we will arrange the fix.

Q38How do I care for my new screen after the repair?

The replacement screen is the same build quality as your original, so the same care applies. Clean with a soft, slightly damp microfibre cloth only. Avoid alcohol-based products, household cleaners, and anything abrasive as these break down the anti-reflective coating over time. Close the lid carefully and avoid doing so with pens, cables, or earphones resting on the keyboard. Carrying your MacBook in a padded sleeve or case makes a significant difference to long-term screen protection.

Apple vs MacExpress for MacBook Screen Repairs

4 questions on warranty implications, service differences, and what Apple does not always tell you

Q39Will getting my MacBook repaired by MacExpress void my Apple warranty?

Under Australian Consumer Law, you retain your consumer rights regardless of where a device is serviced. Apple cannot legally void your entire warranty because you chose an independent repairer. This is a common misconception worth clearing up. Apple may decline warranty service on the specific component we have replaced, but other parts of your MacBook that we have not touched remain covered. In practice, most MacBook screen damage is accidental, and accidental damage is not covered by Apple’s standard warranty regardless of where the repair is done.

Q40Apple told me my whole top case needs replacing. Is that right?

Apple’s service process for many MacBook models involves replacing the top case, which can include the keyboard, battery, and other components, even when only the screen needs attention. This is how Apple structures their service and it is a large part of why their out-of-warranty pricing is often very high. At MacExpress we replace the screen assembly specifically. We are not replacing your keyboard or battery when there is nothing wrong with them. You get a repaired screen without paying for parts your MacBook does not need. Get a quote from us to see what a screen-only repair costs for your model.

Q41Apple gave me a long turnaround time. Can you do it faster?

In most cases, significantly faster. Apple Stores often send MacBooks to a centralised repair facility, which adds transit time on top of the repair itself. MacExpress repairs are done in our own workshop and are typically completed within 24 hours of receiving your MacBook. Total door to door time averages around three working days, which is considerably quicker than Apple’s typical out-of-warranty turnaround for screen repairs.

Q42Apple said my MacBook cannot be repaired. Should I get a second opinion?

Yes, absolutely. Apple’s definition of cannot be repaired sometimes means it is not viable under their service model rather than being physically impossible. Independent repairers work differently and can often repair screens that Apple has declined to service. Get in touch with photos of the damage and we will give you an honest assessment of what is possible.

Courier Collection and Australia-Wide Service

6 questions on how collection, transit, and return works

Q43Is the courier collection and return really free?

Yes, completely. MacExpress arranges free tracked courier collection from your address and free tracked return shipping as part of every repair. There is no freight charge, no packaging fee, and no delivery cost added to your quote. This applies to all locations across Australia. You can see our full service areas here.

Q44Is my MacBook insured while it is in transit?

Yes. Your MacBook is covered during transit in both directions. Shipments are tracked end to end and we take responsibility for the device from the moment the courier collects it until it is delivered back to you. In the unlikely event of a courier issue, we manage that process. You are not left chasing a claim yourself.

Q45Do I need to provide my own packaging?

Yes. You will need to provide your own box or padded packaging. Once your repair is confirmed, we send you clear guidance on what to use and how to pack it so the MacBook travels safely. In most cases a suitable box you already have at home is perfectly adequate. The courier collects from your door so you do not need to visit a post office or depot.

Q46I am in New South Wales. Can you help me?

Yes. We service customers across New South Wales including Sydney, Newcastle, Wollongong, the Central Coast, and regional NSW. A courier collects from your door and your repaired MacBook comes straight back to you.

Q47I am in Queensland. Can you help me?

Yes. We service customers right across Queensland including Brisbane, the Gold Coast, the Sunshine Coast, Cairns, Townsville, Toowoomba, and regional Queensland. Courier collection from your door, tracked return shipping, all included.

Q48I am in Victoria, Western Australia, South Australia, Tasmania, the ACT, or the Northern Territory. Can you still help me?

Yes, absolutely. MacExpress serves customers right across Australia. We have dedicated service pages for Victoria, Western Australia, South Australia, Tasmania, the ACT, and the Northern Territory. The service is identical wherever you are in the country. A courier collects your MacBook from your door and we send it back once the repair is done.

Q49Can I track my MacBook during transit?

Yes. All shipments are fully tracked. You will receive tracking details for both the inbound collection and the return dispatch so you can follow your MacBook at every stage. We also keep you updated throughout the repair process so you always know where things stand.

Payment for MacBook Screen Repairs

3 questions on when you pay, how you pay, and what options are available

Q50When do I need to pay?

You do not pay anything until after the repair has been successfully completed. Payment is collected before we dispatch your MacBook back to you. There is nothing to pay upfront, and nothing is charged unless the repair is done.

No payment required until your repair is successfully completed. You pay before return dispatch, not before we start.
Q51What payment methods do you accept?

We accept all the usual options. Bank transfer, PayID, Visa, Mastercard, and American Express are all fine. We also accept Afterpay if you would prefer to spread the cost.

Bank Transfer
PayID
Visa
Mastercard
American Express
Afterpay
Q52Can I pay using Afterpay?

Yes. If spreading the cost across fortnightly payments works better for you, Afterpay is available. Like all other payment methods, this is settled after the repair is successfully completed and before we send your MacBook back.
